How to track clicks on a WhatsApp link (and why UTMs aren't enough)

A WhatsApp link takes the person off your site and into an app you can't measure. Even so, there are simple ways to know where each conversation comes from.

Why adding UTMs to wa.me doesn't work

UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, etc.) are read by the analytics tool on the destination page. When the destination is WhatsApp, that page isn't yours: nobody collects that data. Besides, WhatsApp only recognizes the text parameter; any other is ignored.

Method 1: a different message per channel

It is the simplest and needs no tools. Generate one link for each place you publish it, changing only the pre-filled message:

ChannelPre-filled message
Instagram bioHi, I'm writing from Instagram.
WebsiteHi, I saw your website and I'd like some information.
QR code at the storeHi, I scanned the code at the store.
Email campaignHi, I received your October email.

At the end of the month you count the chats that start with each phrase. The limitation: the person can delete the text before sending, so the figure is approximate.

Method 2: measure the click on your own site

If the link is on your website, the click does happen somewhere you control. Google Analytics 4, with enhanced measurement turned on, automatically records clicks leaving for another domain as a click event, with the destination URL. Filter for the ones containing wa.me and you'll know how many people tapped the button and from which page.

Remember that a click isn't a conversation: some people open WhatsApp and don't send the message.

Method 3: a bridge page with UTMs

To measure clicks from places you don't control (an ad, an email, a profile), create an intermediate page on your site, for example yoursite.com/whatsapp, with the WhatsApp button clearly visible. On external channels you publish that address with its UTMs:

https://tusitio.com/whatsapp?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio

The visit is recorded with its source and so is the click on the button. It is an extra step for the person, so the page should be minimal: one line of text and the button.
