Create an SMS link with a pre-filled message
Type the number and the text you want to leave ready. You'll get an sms: link that opens the phone's messaging app with everything already written.
Everything is generated in your browser. We don't store phone numbers, emails or messages on any server.
How to use the generator in 3 steps
Type the number with the country code
Use the international format that starts with +, for example +13051234567 for the United States.
Add the message (optional)
This is the text that will appear in the messaging app. The person only has to press send.
Copy the link and place it where you need it
In a button on your mobile site, in an email, in a message or in a campaign.
How an sms: link works
An sms: link asks the phone to open the text messaging app with a recipient, and optionally with a message already written. Its format is: sms:+529981234567?&body=Hola%2C%20quiero%20m%C3%A1s%20informaci%C3%B3n.
- The number goes in international format, with
+and the country code, without spaces or dashes. - The message goes after
body=and is URL-encoded (spaces become%20). QLinky does it automatically. - The
?&body=combination is the one that works best on both iPhone and Android. - The person must press “send”: the message is never sent by itself.
Where to use an SMS link
- “Text us” button on your mobile site: ideal for local businesses, appointments and confirmations.
- Emails and signatures: the number goes from plain text to one tap that opens the message already drafted.
- Campaigns and promo codes: leave a keyword such as “YES” typed so people only have to send it.
- Polls and votes: one tap to reply with the chosen option.
Tips and limits
- It works on phones. On a computer it depends on the installed applications and may not open anything.
- Some apps open links in their own in-app browser (certain social networks, for example) and may block the sms: link. Test it in the place where you are going to publish it.
- Watch the length of the text. A short SMS costs less and arrives cleaner. Emojis and some accented letters reduce the space available per message.
- Test the link from your phone before publishing it, on iPhone and Android if you can.
Why the link uses “?&body=”
The two phone systems historically read the SMS link differently: Android expected sms:number?body=text and iPhone sms:number&body=text. A link written for one opened the other without the message.
The ?&body= combination is accepted by both, which is why this page generates it. If you build the link by hand and the message doesn't show up on one of the two systems, that separator is the first thing to check. More details in the tel: and sms: links guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I create an SMS link with a message?
Type the number with the country code, add the message and press “Generate SMS link”. You'll get a URL in the format sms:+NUMBER?&body=MESSAGE.
Is the SMS sent automatically?
No. The link opens the messaging app with the number and the text typed, and the person must press send.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. QLinky uses the ?&body= format, which is compatible with both systems. Even so, it's worth testing it on the device you are going to share it from.
Can I use the link in my Instagram bio?
Many networks only accept http or https links in the profile link field, so an sms: link may not work there. In that case a WhatsApp or Instagram link is better.
Why doesn't anything open on my computer?
sms: links are designed for phones. On a computer they only work if a messaging application that recognizes them is installed.
Does QLinky store the number or the message?
No. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is sent to or stored on any server.
