Google Maps links: search for a place, pin coordinates or open directions
Not all Maps links do the same thing. Depending on what you need (showing where something is or getting someone there), a different format fits best.
1. Search for an address or a place
This is the format QLinky generates. It opens Maps with the result of a search:
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Av.%20Corrientes%201234%2C%20Buenos%20Aires
It works with addresses, business names (“Café Tortoni Buenos Aires”) or areas. It is a format documented by Google and opens the app on a phone or the site on a computer.
Limitation: it is a search. If the text is ambiguous, Maps may show several results or pick another place. The more complete the address (street, number, city, country), the better.
2. Point to exact coordinates
When the address doesn't exist on the map or is imprecise (a field, a side entrance, a stall at a market), use latitude and longitude:
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=-34.603722,-58.381592
To get the coordinates, press and hold the spot in the Maps app (or right-click on a computer) and copy them. Latitude first, longitude second, separated by a comma and using a decimal point.
3. Open directions straight away
If what you want is for the person to get there, save them a step with a directions link:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=Av.%20Corrientes%201234%2C%20Buenos%20Aires&travelmode=driving| Parameter | What it does |
|---|---|
destination | Where to go. Address, name or coordinates. |
origin | Where from. If omitted, Maps uses the person's current location. |
travelmode | driving, walking, bicycling or transit. |
waypoints | Intermediate stops, separated by | (encoded as %7C). |
4. The short link from the Share button
When you tap “Share” on a place's listing, Maps gives you a short link like maps.app.goo.gl/…. It points to the exact business listing, with its photos, opening hours and reviews, so it is the best option when your business already has a Google listing.
Which one to use
- Your business has a Google listing: the short link from Share.
- Any address, quickly and without opening Maps: the search link (the one QLinky generates).
- A spot with no address: coordinates.
- An event invitation or a home delivery: the directions link.
A common mistake: using the embed code
Google's “Embed a map” option gives you an <iframe> block to show the map inside a web page. It isn't a link: you can't paste it into WhatsApp or an email.
