Google Calendar link parameters: dates, time zone and recurring events
The “Add to Google Calendar” link is a URL with parameters. Knowing them lets you do things a basic generator doesn't cover, such as all-day or recurring events.
The base URL
https://calendar.google.com/calendar/render?action=TEMPLATE&text=Webinar&dates=20261015T150000Z/20261015T160000Z
Google doesn't publish official documentation for these parameters, but they have been used reliably for many years.
| Parameter | What it sets | Example |
|---|---|---|
action | Always TEMPLATE. Required. | action=TEMPLATE |
text | Event title. | text=Reuni%C3%B3n%20de%20equipo |
dates | Start and end, separated by a slash. | dates=20261015T150000Z/20261015T160000Z |
ctz | Time zone used to read dates that have no Z. | ctz=America/Bogota |
details | Description. Links are allowed. | details=Trae%20tu%20laptop |
location | Place or address. | location=Av.%20Reforma%20222 |
recur | Recurrence rule in RRULE format. | recur=RRULE:FREQ=WEEKLY;COUNT=4 |
add | Guests, separated by commas. | [email protected] |
Dates: the three forms
In universal time (with Z)
20261015T150000Z means October 15, 2026, 15:00 UTC. Each person sees the event converted to their own time zone. It is the safest form for online events with an audience in several countries, and it is the one QLinky uses.
In local time, with an explicit zone
Without the final Z and with the ctz parameter: dates=20261015T100000/20261015T110000&ctz=America/Bogota. The event is fixed at 10:00 Bogotá time.
All day
Date only, no time, and with the end date set to the following day: dates=20261015/20261016 is a single-day event on October 15.
Recurring events
The recur parameter uses the rules of the iCalendar standard:
RRULE:FREQ=DAILY;COUNT=5: every day, five times.RRULE:FREQ=WEEKLY;BYDAY=MO,WE: every Monday and Wednesday.RRULE:FREQ=MONTHLY;UNTIL=20261231T000000Z: once a month until the end of the year.
Limits worth knowing
- The link doesn't create the event by itself: it opens the pre-filled form and the person has to tap Save.
- It requires a signed-in Google account.
- If you change the date later, people who already saved the event aren't notified. That takes a real calendar invitation.
- You can't set a reminder or the color from the link.
What about people who use Outlook or Apple?
Outlook on the web has an equivalent link:
https://outlook.live.com/calendar/0/deeplink/compose?path=/calendar/action/compose&rru=addevent&subject=Webinar&startdt=2026-10-15T15:00:00Z&enddt=2026-10-15T16:00:00Z
There is no web link for Apple Calendar. The universal option is to offer an .ics file to download, which every calendar program opens.
